A clear picture
Travelling together, with two ways to connect.
Choose around how you travel. More people do not automatically make a package shareable.
- When you split up
A connection for each person
Each person checks their phone, assigned package and usage. You can travel separately without relying on the phone that shares a connection.
- When you stay nearby
One phone with a hotspot
If the plan and device allow it, others join that phone’s hotspot. Shared traffic uses that connection’s allowance; consider battery, distance and a backup when you split up.
Two options to verify, not available offers. Check compatibility, coverage, hotspot terms and which device each package is assigned to.
For a family or group, first decide who needs a connection when people separate. If everyone needs independent maps and messaging, compare plans for the individual phones. If the group stays together and sharing is supported, a hotspot may serve other devices. One account does not automatically mean a pooled allowance available to every person.

Compare configurations before counting purchases
Scroll the table to see every column.
| Configuration | When to consider it | Main dependency |
|---|---|---|
| A plan for each phone requiring independence | Separate outings, different arrivals, individual communications | Every phone's compatibility and setup |
| One phone sharing data through a hotspot | People staying together, tablets or occasional shared use | The main phone remaining nearby, powered and connected |
| A combination | Two independent adults with other devices used together | Clear decisions about who shares and when |
The number of travellers is not enough to decide. A tablet used at the accommodation has a different role from the phone carried by someone travelling alone. List the devices and their purpose before ordering a plan for every member of the party.
An eSIM is not a QR code to copy onto every phone
The official new Airalo guide describes separately configured devices and packages associated with the selected device. It does not describe one eSIM as a profile to install indiscriminately across several phones. Verify the receiving device before paying.
If your app shows the earlier My eSIMs workflow, use the instructions for that purchase. Do not apply a feature described for the newer Packages area to an older product without checking. For a replacement phone during a trip, consult the new-phone guide .
When sharing a hotspot is worth comparing
Airalo supports tethering where the device and network permit it . Also read the selected package's terms. Sharing a connection does not create another data allowance: the connected devices' activities contribute to usage on the service providing the connection.
Plan charging for the main phone and use a hotspot password. Google's Pixel documentation explains setup and connection management; other devices may have different menus. Turn sharing off when it is no longer needed and check that a tablet or laptop is not starting unnecessary backups and software downloads.
The practical limitation appears when someone walks away from the main phone. A person collecting tickets while the others wait may need to contact the group. Decide how that will work beforehand. A shared hotspot should not be counted as an independent connection for a traveller taking another route.
A decision example without invented prices
Imagine two adults and a tablet travelling for ten days. If the adults separate during visits, compare a plan for each phone; the tablet can use Wi-Fi or a hotspot when everyone is together. If the second adult already has sufficient included roaming, an extra eSIM purchase may be unnecessary.
Calculate the complete cost of real configurations: separate packages versus a shared plan plus any necessary backup. Compare the same dates and activities. One purchase is not proof of a saving; it might require a larger allowance or fail to meet the need for independence.
Also consider the consequences of a flat battery or misplaced phone. Keeping booking details on a second device is useful even if that person does not purchase another mobile plan. Agree on meeting points and an alternative contact method before a separation occurs.
Before buying for several people
- Check the exact models and carrier locks against Airalo's compatibility guidance .
- Record who stays together and who arrives, leaves or takes separate trips.
- Check existing roaming, the destination list and validity of any new packages.
- Assign each purchase to the intended device and retain confirmations.
- Save essential addresses, bookings and an alternative contact on the phones that need them.
- Estimate consumption with the travel data-budget guide , including devices connected through a hotspot.
Frequently asked questions
Does one Airalo account connect everyone?
Managing several devices and automatically pooling their data are different capabilities. Check package assignment rather than inferring a family plan from account access alone.
Does a tablet need eSIM support to use a hotspot?
When it connects to the phone's Wi-Fi hotspot, it uses that shared connection. Check that the phone, network and package support the intended arrangement.
Is a separate eSIM always best for each person?
No. Independence, included services and actual usage matter. Compare two concrete arrangements instead of automatically purchasing one plan per traveller.
