New phone: what happens to your Airalo eSIM

Transfer, reinstallation and a new device are different things. Prepare your new phone without deleting your working connection first.

The quick answer

Do not assume you can move an Airalo eSIM to a new phone. Airalo’s documentation ties the service to the device where it is installed. Before erasing the old phone, arrange connectivity for the new one and treat your home SIM transfer separately from your travel package.

Keep in mind

  1. Reinstalling and transferring are different operations.

  2. Your Airalo account and your eSIM profile are different things.

  3. Check the new phone before erasing the old one.

Three different operations

OperationWhat changesBefore you proceed
Signing in to your accountYou see purchases on another phoneDo not treat that as evidence that data can move
Reinstalling on the same phoneYou restore a profile on its original deviceCheck the options in your app
Switching to another phoneA different device needs the connectionArrange a package for the new device

Check which Airalo experience you have

The official guide distinguishes “Packages”, with setup for each device, from “My eSIMs”, with individual eSIM instructions. The new flow supports reinstallation on the same device, while packages remain assigned to their original device.

The practical step is to open the linked guide and compare it with your app. Advice that says “you can never reinstall” is too broad. Equally, a reinstall option does not mean a package can be moved to a different phone.

Why iPhone’s transfer option is not a guarantee

Apple offers eSIM Quick Transfer when the carrier supports it. Having that feature on your phone therefore does not prove that every installed plan can use it. Check your usual mobile line and your Airalo service separately.

Make a list of what you need to recover: your home number, app access, travel profile and remaining data. Those are four separate checks. Restoring your photos or apps does not prove that mobile connectivity is ready.

If the old phone still works

Consider using its hotspot to connect your new device temporarily, if the plan and phone support it. That can help you finish setup and sign-ins without immediately removing the existing profile.

Before handing over or erasing the old phone, open a webpage on the new one with Wi-Fi turned off. Check calls or texts too if you need them: opening the Airalo app alone does not test the mobile connection. For a package issue, provide your order reference to support through its official channel.

Frequently asked questions

Can I scan the same QR code on the new phone?

Do not assume a QR code that has already been used can transfer service. Check the options for your purchase and ask support before deleting a working connection.

I deleted the eSIM. Should I buy another plan immediately?

First check the flow available in your app and contact support. Recovery on the same device depends on the Airalo experience and profile; avoid repeated deletions.

Does signing in to the same account move my data?

No: account access and a package’s device assignment are different things. Check the device shown in the package details before buying or setting up.
