eSIM checklist: before flying, on arrival and back home

A practical sequence for preparing your eSIM: compatibility, validity, line settings and a connection check when you arrive.

The quick answer

Before travelling, check your phone, covered countries and when validity begins. Install when your package allows it and you have a stable connection. On arrival, select the eSIM for mobile data and try a webpage with Wi-Fi off. Purchase, installation and the start of validity are not always the same moment.

Keep in mind

  1. Read the validity rule before installing.

  2. Check each line separately.

  3. Keep instructions and bookings available offline.

Before buying: four decisions

At home: prepare what you will need offline

Use a reliable connection for setup. Do not choose the timing just from your flight: some plans start when they first connect to a supported network, others at installation. Your package’s rule is the one that matters.

Save instructions, accommodation details and bookings somewhere you can open without internet. Keep installation codes private: a useful screenshot for you should not become a public image or be shared in a group.

Tick the checks as you prepare your phone. Ticks only remain on this page.

On arrival: verify one thing at a time

Enable the travel line and select it for mobile data. Follow the package instructions for data roaming and APN settings. Check your home SIM separately: choosing something on the travel line does not automatically change every home-line setting.

Temporarily turn Wi-Fi off and open a lightweight webpage. If it works, check the maps or messaging app you need to reach your accommodation. If it does not, note the message on screen before changing other settings. Deleting the profile should not be your first troubleshooting step.

During the trip: keep data and days separate

A finite-data package can end when you use its allowance or when its validity period expires. Check both in the package details. Do not treat turning the line off as a way to pause or extend validity: refer to the package conditions.

Before crossing a border, check coverage again. For a stopover where you plan to stay offline, saved bookings may be more useful than a hurried purchase. Decide in advance which stops actually require mobile data.

Back home: review your lines

A short note beats a generic estimate: trip length, main activities, hotspot use and data remaining. This is not a comparative provider test, but a record of your own needs.

Frequently asked questions

Must I wait until landing to install?

Not always. Read the plan’s rule: when installation does not start validity, you can prepare earlier on a stable connection. If validity starts immediately, time installation around your travel dates.

My travel eSIM says no service at home. Is it broken?

Not necessarily. Outside its covered countries or networks, you cannot yet make a useful connection check for your destination. Compare the message with your package instructions.

Should I always enable roaming on both SIMs?

No. Follow the travel line’s instructions and decide separately how to use your home line. The correct settings depend on the package and your carrier.
