eSIM Dubai: the practical guide for international travelers [2026]

Quick summary (for those in a hurry)
TL;DR — How much an eSIM for Dubai costs with Airalo: The Airalo eSIM for Dubai (catalog " United Arab Emirates ") starts at $4.50 for 1 GB / 7 days and goes up to $35 for 10 days unlimited, versus roughly $45+ that you'd pay with a typical carrier daily roaming pass for the same week. Coverage runs on the Burj Mobile network, the tourist sub-brand of Etisalat e& — the carrier with the strongest signal across Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Palm Jumeirah and the entire Metro. The same eSIM covers Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah with no profile switching: the United Arab Emirates are a single market for Airalo. For a long layover en route to Asia ( Bangkok , Tokyo, Singapore via Emirates), the 1 GB / 7-day plan at $4.50 is by far the most economical choice.
A traveler in a popular forum thread put it plainly: "Sire4918 fantastic. Used it in Dubai where the cost per GB is very high. Installed at the airport, working as soon as I landed and for the whole trip." Dubai is exactly the destination where the per-GB cost of the official local SIM is high (Etisalat Tourist 50 GB ≈ AED 220 ≈ $60) and where the Airalo eSIM at $12 wins decisively.
What an eSIM is and why you need one in Dubai
The United Arab Emirates sit outside any roaming union. Your home plan — even if it includes "minutes, texts and data abroad" — almost never works the same way once you land at DXB Terminal 3. Most US, UK and EU carriers slot the UAE into their most expensive "World" or "Rest of World" zone, and daily passes are designed precisely to monetize that friction.
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM built into your smartphone. You download a profile from the app, install it via QR code, and when you land it connects automatically to a local Emirati carrier. No lines at the Etisalat or du counter in the arrivals terminal, no passport to hand over, no AED in cash to exchange. One traveler in the same thread mentions Dubai in their rotation: "Adding my experience. Used without a single problem in Canada , Dubai, UK and South Africa. Super convenient, works great."
For an international traveler in Dubai, three concrete things change:
- Keep your home carrier number active: dual-SIM (physical + eSIM) lets you receive SMS for bank verifications and 2FA, while paying only the local Emirati rate for data.
- You pay once, in your home currency: the difference between $15 spent before you leave and a surprise $60 roaming bill after the trip is predictability — useful if the expense goes on a corporate card.
- Works across all the Emirates: the same eSIM profile covers Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman and Ras al-Khaimah. For a Dubai + Abu Dhabi tour, you don't need a second eSIM.
Airalo for Dubai (and for the United Arab Emirates): the seven available plans
Airalo offers seven local plans for the United Arab Emirates, all operated by the Burj Mobile carrier (Etisalat e& tourist sub-brand). For travelers looking for up-to-date Dubai eSIM pricing, the Airalo 2026 catalog starts at $4.50.
Scroll the table to see every column.
| Plan | Data | Validity | Price USD | USD | USD/GB | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UAE 1 GB / 7 days | 1 GB | 7 days | $4.50 | $4.50 | $4.50 | long layover, weekend in Dubai |
| UAE 2 GB / 15 days | 2 GB | 15 days | $7.00 | $7.00 | $3.50 | 4-day business trip |
| UAE 3 GB / 30 days | 3 GB | 30 days | $9.00 | $9.00 | $3.00 | two weeks low-data |
| UAE 5 GB / 30 days | 5 GB | 30 days | $12.00 | $12.00 | $2.40 | recommended plan for Dubai 5–10 days |
| UAE 10 GB / 30 days | 10 GB | 30 days | $20.00 | $20.00 | $2.00 | family with heavy use |
| UAE 20 GB / 30 days | 20 GB | 30 days | $34.00 | $34.00 | $1.70 | digital nomad, work in DIFC |
| UAE Unlimited / 10 days | unlimited | 10 days | $35.00 | $35.00 | — | streaming, heavy hotspot |
Three observations that change the choice:
- The 5 GB plan is the sweet spot for a week in Dubai. At $2.40 per GB it's one of the best value-for-money ratios in the entire Airalo Middle East catalog. For a mix of Maps, WhatsApp and Instagram across Dubai Mall, Marina and a day trip to Abu Dhabi, it's plenty.
- 1 GB / 7 days at $4.50 is unbeatable for a layover. Dubai is the largest stopover hub for travel to Asia via Emirates: anyone flying to Bangkok, Tokyo or the Maldives with a long 12–24 hour layover only needs Maps, a translator and a few messages.
- Unlimited 10 days is an apparent trap. At $35 it costs nearly the same as 20 GB / 30 days ($34) but applies a Fair Usage Policy (Burj Mobile cap around 2 GB per day at full speed). For most trips the 20 GB / 30-day plan is the better deal.

Etisalat or du: which network does the Airalo eSIM use in Dubai
TL;DR — Which network Airalo uses in Dubai: The Airalo eSIM in Dubai runs on Burj Mobile, tourist sub-brand of Etisalat e&. Etisalat is the legacy carrier with the most extensive coverage in tourist areas (Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Marina, Palm Jumeirah) and holds exclusivity on the Dubai Metro antennas. du Telecom (rebrand of EITC) is stronger in industrial zones and new developments (Dubai South, Expo City). For the average tourist, Etisalat via Burj Mobile is the choice that brings the fewest surprises.
Two major carriers operate in the Emirates: Etisalat e& (historical, controlled by the federal state) and du Telecom (rebrand of EITC). The Airalo eSIM runs on the Burj Mobile network, Etisalat e&'s tourist MVNO. In practice that means:
- Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Marina, Palm Jumeirah, JBR: excellent 5G signal, with DAS systems inside the towers.
- Dubai Metro (Red and Green Line): Etisalat holds an exclusive contract for the antennas along the tunnels. The 4G connection doesn't drop between stops — useful because between Mall of the Emirates and Burj Khalifa you handle everything via WhatsApp and Maps.
- DXB Airport (Terminals 1, 2, 3): full 5G coverage. Free Wi-Fi available as fallback but slower.
- Dubai–Abu Dhabi route (E11 Sheikh Zayed Road): continuous 4G across all 80 miles (130 km).
- Desert (excursions to Lahbab or Margham): 4G in tour camp areas; in the deeper dunes it may drop to 3G as with any local carrier.
For the typical traveler — tourist, business at DIFC, family at the parks — Etisalat via Burj Mobile is the choice that brings the fewest surprises.
Does Airalo work in Abu Dhabi and the other Emirates too?
TL;DR — One eSIM for all the Emirates: Yes. The same eSIM profile UAE covers Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras al-Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm al-Quwain — all seven emirates. The Burj Mobile (Etisalat e&) network has extensive 4G/5G coverage in all seven, with no international handover or profile switching. If you land at DXB, spend 3 days in the city, take the E101 bus to Abu Dhabi (Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi, Yas Island), you keep using the same plan. For an extended Emirates tour, the 5 GB / 30 days at $12 strikes a good balance.
A common question in traveler groups planning a tour of the United Arab Emirates: "do I need two different eSIMs if I'm also going to Abu Dhabi?" Or: "UAE eSIM vs Dubai eSIM: is there a difference?" The short answer is no — Airalo does not separate the seven emirates, because technically they are a single telecom market governed by the federal TDRA.
In practice:
- Land in Dubai (DXB), spend 4 days in the city (Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Marina, Old Dubai) — the eSIM is connected to Burj Mobile.
- Take the E101 bus to Abu Dhabi (80 mi / 130 km, 2 hours) for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Yas Island with Ferrari World and Yas Marina Circuit — the same eSIM keeps working without a network switch.
- Visit Sharjah for the Sharjah Arts Museum, the Blue Souk, the mosques of the cultural emirate — same eSIM.
- Extend the tour to Ajman, Umm al-Quwain, Ras al-Khaimah, Fujairah — same eSIM.
The only exception is if the tour extends to Oman (Muscat, Wadi Shab, Salalah) or to Qatar (Doha): the UAE plan won't work there. A traveler in the same forum thread asks exactly the right question: "For the Emirates, Oman and Qatar do you have any experience? I've seen that Airalo, on local packages, runs on specific carriers (du or Etisalat), while on the World package it sometimes uses other carriers." For Oman you need a separate Airalo Oman eSIM; for Qatar an Airalo Qatar eSIM. Or the regional Airalo Middle East plan that covers 13 Gulf countries with a single installation — useful for a combined Dubai + Mecca pilgrimage or a Persian Gulf cruise tour.
Is Airalo or a carrier roaming pass better for Dubai?
TL;DR — Airalo Dubai or carrier roaming pass: On any trip over 48 hours, Airalo UAE beats a typical international roaming pass. One week in Dubai: Airalo 5 GB / 30 days at $12 vs typical carrier World Pass at ~$70 — savings around $58, more than 80% less. On a single 24-hour layover a daily carrier pass can stay competitive; for any other case (vacation, business, family, long layover) Airalo wins unambiguously.
The recurring question in traveler groups is: "is Airalo worth it or should I just use my carrier's World pass?". It depends on the duration. All rates are verified on official sites as of May 6, 2026, World/Rest-of-World zone for the Emirates.
Week in Dubai (7 days, 1 traveler)
Scroll the table to see every column.
| Solution | Cost | GB included | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| AT&T International Day Pass ($12/day × 7) | $84.00 | uses home plan allowance | Activates on first connection to a UAE network |
| Verizon TravelPass ($12/day × 7) | $84.00 | variable | Daily cumulative charge |
| EE Roam Abroad (£10/day) | £70.00 | uses home plan allowance | The 7 days start at first use |
| T-Mobile Magenta (included, throttled to 128 kbps) | $50/mo high-speed pass | 5 GB | Without pass, speeds are unusable for Maps and video |
| Airalo UAE 5 GB / 30 days | $12.00 | 5 GB | Set up before you leave, pay once |
Savings vs the typical carrier day-pass: about $72 for the week, with more dedicated data and 23 days of buffer if you decide to extend your trip. Against EE Roam Abroad the savings climb past $70. This is exactly the trade-off forum traveler ilboy95 (post 6) captured: "Used it in Dubai where the cost per GB is very high" — Dubai is the destination where the per-GB cost of a traditional SIM is high, and where the low-cost Airalo eSIM creates the sharpest value differential in the catalog.
For a structured comparison against carrier roaming passes go to Airalo vs carrier roaming for Dubai (the 'cost per GB is very high' case) .
24-hour layover at DXB and 3–4 day business trip
Scroll the table to see every column.
| Case | Carrier Day Pass | Airalo |
|---|---|---|
| 24-hour layover en route to Asia | $12 × 1 day | $4.50 (1 GB / 7 days) |
| 4-day business trip (DIFC, trade show) | $12 × 4 days | $7.00 (2 GB / 15 days) |
On a single layover the carrier day pass stays competitive, but the Airalo eSIM leaves you with 6 days of buffer for the return if you connect through Dubai again (frequent with Emirates US/UK↔Asia, FlyDubai, Emirates SkyCargo). On a 4-day Dubai trip the savings are clear: $41, and the corporate expense report is much easier to manage.
When does a carrier day pass still win?
The only realistic scenario is the traveler who refuses on principle to manage a second line. If for you the value of not touching anything outweighs the $50+ difference, the carrier pass remains simpler. For any other case — vacation, business, family, layover — the Airalo eSIM is unambiguously the better deal.
Does your tour package already include a Dubai SIM? What to choose
Several tour operators on Dubai packages offer a pre-activated local prepaid SIM, delivered to your hotel or the welcome desk at the airport. It typically costs $16–$28 for 5–10 GB / 7 days, usually Etisalat or du. It makes sense in two profiles: families with small children on their first international trip, and travelers less digitally confident with QR codes.
The math says this: $22 from the tour operator vs $12 for Airalo UAE 5 GB = $10 difference, in exchange for a physical SIM to insert (ejecting yours) and no way to keep your home number active. For anyone who's set up an eSIM at least once, the math is clear. For first-timers, the tour operator bundle isn't a bad choice.
How to activate the Airalo eSIM for Dubai, step by step
TL;DR — How to activate the Airalo Dubai eSIM: download the Airalo app, search for "United Arab Emirates" (NOT "Dubai" — the catalog is organized by sovereign state), buy the UAE 5 GB / 30-day plan, follow "Start installation" on your home Wi-Fi. The iPhone adds the eSIM under Settings > Cellular. Label the line ("Airalo UAE"), set cellular data to the Airalo line, enable data roaming on that line. When you land at DXB the eSIM registers on Burj Mobile/Etisalat within 30–90 seconds. Rule: install before you leave, activate on arrival.
The installation takes ten minutes, best done at home over Wi-Fi before departure. Unlike Turkey, the Emirates have no requirement to register your phone or install the eSIM before arrival.
- Download the Airalo app from the App Store (iPhone) or the Google Play Store (Android). Create an account with email and password.
- Search for "United Arab Emirates" in the country search screen (NOT "Dubai" — the catalog is organized by sovereign state). You'll see the seven Burj Mobile plans.
- Choose the data plan based on your trip length. For a one-week vacation, the 5 GB plan is the balanced one; for a layover or weekend, 1 GB.
- Pay in US dollars with card or PayPal. If your card isn't USD-denominated, your issuer applies the exchange rate of the transaction day (typically 1–2% markup).
- Install the eSIM from the "My eSIMs" screen. On iPhone the installation is nearly automatic. On Android it depends on the model: Galaxy S22+, Pixel 6+, recent Xiaomi support "Quick Install"; older devices may need the manual QR code procedure.
- Activate the data plan from settings when you land at DXB or AUH. Connection is automatic (up to 5 minutes for the first handshake).
For the complete procedure with iPhone iOS 18 and Android (Samsung + Xiaomi MIUI/HyperOS) screenshots, go to How to activate the Airalo eSIM for Dubai .
In Dubai you set the Airalo eSIM as the "default data line" (iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → "Airalo UAE"; Samsung: SIM Manager → Mobile Data) and keep your home physical line as the voice line. Data roaming: ON only on the Airalo line, OFF on your home line. This way you still receive SMS on your home number (bank, 2FA, Booking) while data goes through Airalo. If it won't connect after landing, Not working? See the troubleshooting guide .
How many eSIMs do you need for the family in Dubai?
Common use case for families on park vacations (Aquaventure Atlantis, IMG Worlds, LEGOLAND Dubai). Typical scenario: family of four (two parents, two teenagers), one week in Dubai.
- Option A — One eSIM per person. 4 × Airalo UAE 1 GB / 7 days = $18. Each person has their own connection. The cheapest option.
- Option B — Two eSIMs (parents) + hotspot for the kids. 2 × Airalo UAE 5 GB / 30 days = $24. Parents share tethering. 10 GB total, 23 days of buffer.
- Option C — A single 10 GB eSIM as hotspot for everyone. 1 × Airalo UAE 10 GB / 30 days = $20. Cheaper than B, but if that phone's battery dies at the water park, the whole family loses connection.
The recommendation: Option A is genuinely the best value — the Etisalat network is so good that 1 GB each is plenty for a week of normal use. Option B for families with heavy social media use. Option C only for trips where the group always moves together.
Comparison to a typical carrier day pass for four people: 4 × $84 = $336. The family on Option A saves over $300.
Holafly or Saily or Airalo for Dubai?
Holafly is Airalo's main competitor. It sells an "unlimited data UAE" plan starting at $7.50 per day. Saily (Nord Security) starts at around $4.30 for 1 GB / 7 days.
For a week in Dubai the math is clear: 7 × $7.50 = $52.50 for unlimited Holafly, vs $12 for the Airalo UAE 5 GB / 30-day plan. Holafly only pays off for travelers who know they'll stream heavily beyond 5 GB — a minority profile for tourists in Dubai, where luxury hotel and mall Wi-Fi is everywhere. On the mid-size formats (5 GB, 10 GB) Airalo remains the better per-GB deal than Saily.
For the detailed comparison see Airalo vs Holafly: complete comparison .
Frequently asked questions: Dubai eSIM
Does the Airalo Dubai eSIM also work in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah?
Yes, with no additional configuration. The same eSIM profile UAE covers Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras al-Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm al-Quwain. The Burj Mobile (Etisalat e&) network has 4G/5G coverage across the seven emirates. If you land in Dubai and take a day trip to Abu Dhabi (Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi), the plan keeps working without interruption.
Etisalat or du: which network is better?
Both are excellent in the Emirates. Etisalat e& has the most extensive coverage in tourist areas (Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Marina) and exclusivity on Metro antennas. du is stronger in industrial zones and new development areas (Dubai South, Expo City). The Airalo eSIM runs on Etisalat via Burj Mobile: for the typical tourist, that's the choice with the fewest surprises.
Can I buy a Dubai eSIM for a 12-hour layover?
Yes. The most suitable plan is the UAE 1 GB / 7 days at $4.50: it covers the layover without trouble and leaves you 6 days of buffer if you connect through Dubai again on the return (frequent on Emirates US/UK↔Asia, FlyDubai). If you have less than 6 hours and don't leave the terminal, DXB's free Wi-Fi is enough — but as soon as you check into a hotel or hop in an Uber/Careem, you're offline without an eSIM.
Can I use the Dubai eSIM to call home numbers on WhatsApp?
Yes. WhatsApp voice calls use about 0.5 MB per minute, video calls about 5 MB per minute. Even with the 1 GB / 7-day plan you can make short WhatsApp calls every day. Note: the UAE historically blocked VoIP apps (Skype, WhatsApp calls, FaceTime) on residential local SIMs, but Airalo data plans use VPN-friendly international routes so these apps work normally on the Burj Mobile tourist visitor pack since 2024.
Does the Dubai eSIM also work inside Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall?
Yes. Etisalat e& has installed an internal DAS (Distributed Antenna System): the 5G signal reaches the 124th and 148th floors of the tower (At The Top) and covers every level of the Mall, including the ice rink and aquarium. Travelers who try the same with a non-local roaming pass report slower speeds — the difference is the local network optimized for high-density tourist traffic.
Can I get a business invoice for the Airalo Dubai eSIM?
Airalo issues a PDF payment receipt downloadable from the app (Profile → Order history → Request receipt) with details that can be made out to a company — useful for expense reports. The receipt shows the USD amount, conversion, and 5% VAT (UAE regime). Airalo does not currently issue formal B2B tax invoices for company VAT numbers: for purchases that require a formal tax invoice, ask your travel agency to include the SIM in the Dubai package or use a local reseller.
Does the Airalo Dubai eSIM also work in Oman or Qatar?
No. The local UAE plan only covers the seven emirates. Oman and Qatar have their own separate Airalo eSIMs. If you plan a Dubai + Oman tour (Muscat, Wadi Shab, Salalah) or Dubai + Qatar (Doha), you'll need either a second eSIM or the regional Airalo Middle East plan that covers 13 Gulf countries.
Do I need to enable data roaming for Airalo Dubai?
Yes, on the Airalo line. Even though the eSIM uses local Burj Mobile/Etisalat e& data, the iPhone technically treats that line as "roaming" and requires the "Data Roaming" toggle to be ON for the Airalo line. On your home carrier line, turn it OFF so you don't get charged for anything.
Final verdict: real opinions and operational advice
Dubai is the destination where the gap between a carrier roaming pass and an eSIM is sharpest: a full week at $12 vs ~$84. Around 70 dollars you have no reason to hand to a carrier to cover an area where the Etisalat network is excellent. A frequent traveler in our research thread put it this way (post 6): "cost per GB is very high, installed at the airport, working as soon as I landed and for the whole trip."
After running the numbers on seven Airalo plans + major carrier roaming options:
- Dubai stopover en route to Asia (12–48 hours): Airalo UAE 1 GB / 7 days — $4.50, also covers your return.
- Dubai business 3–4 days (DIFC, trade show): Airalo UAE 2 GB / 15 days — $7.00, downloadable receipt for expense reports.
- Week-long vacation (Dubai + Abu Dhabi): Airalo UAE 5 GB / 30 days — $12, the absolute sweet spot — covers all the Emirates with no profile switching.
- Family with kids, two weeks: Airalo UAE 10 GB / 30 days as hotspot, $20.
- Short-term expat / digital nomad: Airalo UAE 20 GB / 30 days at $34.
- Emirates + Oman/Qatar tour: regional Airalo Middle East plan (verify coverage in the app before purchase).
For 95% of trips to Dubai — vacation, DIFC business, Emirates layover, family at the parks, Dubai + Abu Dhabi + Sharjah tour — the Airalo eSIM configured at home with ten minutes of prep is the simplest and most economical choice. The only exception remains the first international trip for a family with small children, where the tour operator bundle may be worth the $10 difference to skip the technical setup.

Does the Airalo Dubai eSIM also work in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah?
Yes, with no additional configuration. The same eSIM profile `UAE` covers Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras al-Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm al-Quwain. The Burj Mobile (Etisalat e&) network has 4G/5G coverage across the seven emirates. How much does an Airalo eSIM for Dubai cost in 2026?
The seven Airalo UAE plans (valid for Dubai too) range from $4.50 for 1 GB / 7 days to $35 for 10 days unlimited. The recommended plan for a one-week Dubai + Abu Dhabi vacation is 5 GB / 30 days at $12 — saving roughly $70 vs a week of carrier roaming day passes.
Etisalat or du: which network is better in Dubai?
Both are excellent in the Emirates. Etisalat e& has the most extensive coverage in tourist areas (Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Marina) and exclusivity on Metro antennas. du Telecom is stronger in industrial zones and new development areas (Dubai South, Expo City). The Airalo eSIM runs on Etisalat via Burj Mobile: for the typical tourist, that's the choice with the fewest surprises.
Can I buy a Dubai eSIM for a 12-hour layover?
Yes. The most suitable plan is UAE 1 GB / 7 days at $4.50: it covers the layover without trouble and leaves you 6 days of buffer if you connect through Dubai again on the return (frequent on Emirates US/UK↔Asia). If you have less than 6 hours and don't leave the terminal, DXB's free Wi-Fi is enough — but as soon as you check into a hotel or hop in an Uber/Careem, you're offline without an eSIM.
Does the Dubai eSIM also work at Burj Khalifa or in the Metro tunnels?
Yes. Etisalat e& has installed an internal DAS (Distributed Antenna System) inside the Burj Khalifa tower: the 5G signal reaches the 124th and 148th floors (At The Top) and covers every level of the Mall. In the Dubai Metro tunnels (Red and Green Line) Etisalat holds an exclusive contract for the antennas — the 4G connection doesn't drop between stops.
Do I need to enable data roaming for Airalo Dubai?
Yes, on the Airalo line. Even though the eSIM uses local Burj Mobile/Etisalat e& data, the iPhone technically treats that line as 'roaming' and requires the 'Data Roaming' toggle to be ON for the Airalo line. On your home carrier line, turn it OFF so you don't get charged — it's the first thing to check when 'Airalo isn't working'.
Airalo does not currently issue formal B2B tax invoices for company VAT numbers.
Does the Airalo Dubai eSIM also work in Oman or Qatar?
No. The local UAE plan only covers the seven emirates. Oman and Qatar have their own separate Airalo eSIMs. If you plan a Dubai + Oman tour (Muscat, Wadi Shab) or Dubai + Qatar (Doha), you'll need either a second eSIM or the regional Airalo Middle East plan that covers more Gulf countries.
